I do not see why learners are at stake, and for what reason. you seem to assume that free software is made by a bunch of idiots, who have no deep philosophical or educational credibility. On the contrary, free software being assessed only by the peer group and not determined by the company/customer relationships, there is a greater chance of bringing in well researched methods and then subject them to good peer review as well as community review.
